New Song: New Wine

Just set up somewhat of a studio!

Here's a (relatively) new song, a meditation on Luke 7:31 “To what then shall I compare the men of this generation, and what are they like? They are like children who sit in the market place and call to one another, and they say, ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not weep.’ For John the Baptist has come eating no bread and drinking no wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon!’ The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Behold, a gluttonous man and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ Yet wisdom is vindicated by all her children.”

New Wine

Sin is a many-tendriled vine

That grows the grapes that bleed the wine

We pair with bitter herbs and dine

To set our teeth on edge

The sour grapes our fathers’ anguish grew

Went to seed and taxed our children too

Pressing out this vintage we renew

Our dull and drunken pledge

Chorus:

Maybe we’ll sing and dance

While the dirge plays on

Through the market streets

The children call

We cannot seem to see the signs

That shadows never hold new wine

The waxing fruit that bears the dulling bloom

Drying out our mouths still we consume

Draining barrels into empty tombs

Until the taps run dry

Open up the bottle and breathe

When you’re out of balance, breathe

The Spirit’s measure comes

Just breathe and receive

New wine

The world is a wineskin growing old

It is stretching thin at every fold

Until it bursts our hope will hold

And ripen in its time

Maybe we’ll sing and dance

When the old is gone

While the children sing

A wedding song

The common jars will stand as signs

Vessels fit to hold new wine
